What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for chairside economical restorations of esthetic ceramic.
What does that mean in layman’s terms? An in-house, same-day milling machine that creates customized porcelain dental restorations without the patient having to leave the office. In most cases, this includes ceramic crowns, inlays/onlays, dental veneers, or implant restorations.
How CEREC Works
If you’ve heard of 3D printing and CAD/CAM imaging, then you probably already have a good idea as to what the CEREC dental concept is like. In 1987, CEREC was invented to allow dentists to take digital dental impressions and create in-house restorations for their patients, rather than send them off to a 3rd party lab to have made by someone outside of the practice.
By scanning your prepared tooth with a high-resolution imaging wand, the digital information is virtually mapped inside of the CEREC software program. From there, our Phoenix dentist can select a custom color of ceramic and place the block into the machine, where CEREC carves the restoration to match the virtual model of the tooth in the program.
The biggest difference is that the crown is made and delivered on the same day in our Phoenix dentist office. There’s no need to wear a temporary crown for 2-3 weeks or make another appointment to complete your treatment.

What to Expect
A CEREC dental treatment is usually just a little bit longer than a traditional dental appointment. This extra time is when the milling machine is making your restoration, but it provides us with more flexibility when you need to have other dental work completed the same day.
After numbing your tooth, we’ll buff the outer layer or damaged enamel away so that your new restoration can fit in place. Then, we scan it and interpret the 3D image in the CEREC software system. You can even see your virtual tooth right on the computer screen! While your mouth is still numb, the restoration is made and then permanently bonded in place. This unique characteristic of same day CEREC treatments helps us to minimize any sensitivity or discomfort often associated with traditional crown fabrication.
